Maritime Studies at Hunter TAFE

This maritime studies course is for people interested in a career as a Deck Watchkeeper. You will learn to perform various tasks in relation to cargo handling, vessel stability and manoeuvring, equipment checking and maintenance, operational quality and safety.

Hunter TAFE's maritime courses will teach you to communicate using standard marine vocabulary, visual signalling and other maritime equipment. Enrol in this maritime program to learn to determine position of the vessel by using radar and other bridge equipment.

You will be taught how to measure, observe and research weather conditions and interpret and apply these to watchkeeping. This marine course is aligned to the educational requirements for certification as Deck Watchkeeper as described in Marine Orders - Part 3: Seagoing Qualifications (Version 6) under the Australian Navigation Act 1912.

A history of sea time/service on board a vessel will be required to obtain a business certificate of competency from AMSA.
