The NSW Thoroughbred Racing industry is a major industry which contributes significantly to the economy of New South Wales and is one of the state’s major employers. The industry has over 50,000 participants and 16,000 full-time employees.

However, the industry carries inherent safety risks as jockeys, track riders, stable hands, barrier attendants, trainers, farriers and others interact daily with horses that at any time can potentially be the source of injury or even death.

In January 2010, TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute (WSI) formed a strategic partnership with Racing NSW specifically aimed at increasing the safety, sustainability and professionalism of the thoroughbred racing industry through the provision of training and workforce development services across New South Wales
