Workers upskill for National Broadband Network opportunities

The rollout of the National Broadband Network infrastructure is a huge opportunity for Tasmanian contractors, sub-contractors and individuals.  Skills will be the passport to participation in both the project phase and ongoing network support.

While some concerns have been expressed that Tasmania does not have enough skilled and semi-skilled people to meet the implementation timetable, we at the Tasmanian Skills Institute are already seeing strong industry interest in acquiring the skills that the project will demand. In June, we were approached by a group of structured cablers seeking to upskill in anticipation of future work.  Industry-led demand of this type shows the confidence businesses have in their ability to play a large part in implementing this world-class network. In consultation with the industry, we have identified skills requirements in both the technical aspects of fibre splicing, including testing and commissioning, and important safety-related competencies. Our initiative in offering training in these skills has seen strong take-up with more than 40 participants in the south already completing the course. We are keen to run the course in the next few weeks in other regioins of the state or for specific businesses. The National Broadband Network is being implemented in Tasmania ahead of many areas interstate.  This represents an opportunity for enterprising businesses to gain a pre-emptive advantage through participation in the Tasmanian project and then take their skills and knowledge to acquire work interstate.  We look forward to working closely and supporting Tasmanian businesses which have this vision.

The NBN project is a terrific opportunity for Tasmanian businesses and individuals and one we look forward to playing a vital role in as skills partner.
