Young Blood: Designers Market

Young Blood: Designers Market is part of the Powerhouse Museum’s commitment to nurturing new and innovative design.

Young Blood provides the unique opportunity for emerging designers to showcase and launch their creative talent onto the Sydney scene. Set against the backdrop of the Powerhouse Museum, the markets come alive with over 40 designers selling a range of new and original pieces, from fashion to furniture, jewellery, graphic, product, landscape and lighting design. The market will run over four days from Thursday 14 August to Sunday 17 August 2008.

Young Blood also gives visitors the opportunity to meet the makers and talk about their work. The previous markets held in 2005 and 2006 proved to be a great launching pad for many of designers who benefited greatly from the exposure and lucrative sales.

As a curated market, artists and crafts people had to apply for stalls and meet certain selection criteria: originality, creativity and novelty of design or concept; quality of finished work; suitability for a market environment; and appropriate safety standards.

Kara Smith, for example, is one such Young Blood Designer, who makes hand-made bags. “It all started with a piece of gorgeous fabric, begging to be made into something beautiful. My lucky find went into my trusty yet tired-looking handbag. And that’s when it hit me – I’d make a new one myself! Bags are individually named and come with cool details including pockets, vintage buttons and recycled buckles, with all patterns and designs created by me. All bags are unique, one-off and all handmade!”
