2007 Trade Teacher of the Year selected for 2020 Summit

Marion Fitzpatrick, National Trade Teacher of the Year 2007, has been selected to attend the Australia 2020 Summit.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's initiative to "harness the best ideas for building a modern Australia that is ready for the challenges of the 21st century" is set to take place in 3 weeks time on the 19th and 20th of April at Parliament House, Canberra. In order to shape a national long term strategy, 1000 people have been selected to take part in the 2-day summit and tackle 10 key areas:
  • The Productivity Agenda – education, skills, training, science and innovation
  • The Future of the Australian Economy
  • Population, sustainability, climate change and water
  • Future directions for rural industries and rural communities
  • A long-term national health strategy – including the challenges of preventative health, workforce planning and the ageing population
  • Strengthening communities, supporting families and social inclusion
  • Options for the future of indigenous Australia
  • Towards a creative Australia: the future of the arts, film and design
  • The future of Australian governance: renewed democracy, a more open government (including the role of the media), the structure of the Federation and the rights and responsibilities of citizens
  • Australia’s future security and prosperity in a rapidly changing region and world.
  • Marion Fitzgerald's background, experience and commitment to training and development in the hospitality field has placed her in the group which will look at the Productivity Agenda. Marion is currently Head Teacher of Commercial Cookery at Northern Sydney Institute, Ryde College. She has been an Expert and Judge for Australia at the Worldskills International Cooking Competition (Worldskills Australia selects one expert from a large pool of professionals to represent Australia and recognizes them as a leader in the field of cooking and training); WSA regional and national designer and judge, a TAFE NSW Skills Development designer and judge, a TAFE NSW New Zealand National Competition Judge, the Northern Sydney Institute Worldskills Coordinator and judge for the Restaurant and Catering Awards for excellence in catering. The group will also include Deborah Daly, Gold Coast TAFE Institute Director and Marie Persson, Head of NSW TAFE. "It's a great honour for Marion to be recognised and I am sure her contribution will be invaluable," says Brian Wexham, Chief Executive Officer of The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence. Marion will join a list of other Australians from all walks of life and which include successful business people, stay-at-home mums, elder statesmen, media leaders, actors and names such as James Packer,Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman and former Victorian premier Steve Bracks.
