Down to Business @ WorldSkills
Why do a trade? Andrew, talking from the Convention Centre in Sydney where WorldSkills 2008 is being held, has the passionate answers.
About Business Services:
Both Business Services and VETiS business share a common competition space. The two subcategories are quite similar in competition layout, the main difference being the higher level of skill expected with the Business Services sub-category.
The competition is set in a simulated office environment. Competitors are given all of the tasks to be completed over the three days, and it is the responsibility of the competitor to meet particular deadlines and prioritise tasks so all are completed at the appropriate time.
Certain office equipment is shared by all competitors, so it is important for competitors to factor such realistic simulations into their competition plan.
Some of the tasks to be completed include preparing documents and fliers, writing reports, preparing presentations and designing letterheads.
Skills needed to achieve excellence in Business Services and VETiS Business include excellent typing skills, proofreading skills and creative use of initiative. Judges will be critiquing presentation of character and written presentation, as well as time management. This category does not proceed to International level.
About Andrew:
Andrew Bourke used to be a car salesman but decided in 2006 that it wasn’t where he wanted to head in life. Andrew yearned for life experiences and to gain respect from fellow employers, so he decided to start a traineeship in Business Services.
Andrew said he “nearly fell across the kitchen backwards” when he discovered he won gold at the regionals! He views WorldSkills as a great stepping stone for the future and a great way to realise his skills.
