Paramedics On Call - Part 2

SkillsOne recently climbed on board an ambulance to see just what's involved with being a paramedic. This is part 2 of a 3 part series, Paramedics On Call. We chatted to Roger Smyth and Lucy Wright, Paramedics.

In Part 2, we find what skills are needed to be a paramedic including life experience and a certain attitude to life. They also shares the other career paths which are involved in being an paramedic, and where paramedics can work international.

We reach the paramedics destination, who set up an ECG on the patient with breathing difficulties and monitor him while they head back to the hospital.

How To Become a Paramedic:

Applying to become a Student Paramedic consists of a written application, psychometric and medical/fitness assessments, driving assessment and a panel interview.

After successfully completing a three year (or equivalent) period of training, study and on-road practical experience Student Paramedics obtained their Diploma in Paramedical Science and are recognised as a qualified Paramedic.

Paramedics assess, treat and stabilise patients at the scene and then continue this en-route during transport to hospital. They have the ability to apply many life saving skills and drug administrations to assist in a wide variety of illnesses and accidental injuries.

After four year’s experience within Ambulance, Paramedics can apply to undertake an advanced diploma to become an Intensive Care Paramedic.

All paramedics are trained and inducted through the Ambulance Education Centre in Rozelle, Sydney. This facility has the capacity to train 150 – 175 staff in various clinical and technical courses at any time and is a Registered Training Organisation with the Vocational Educational and Training Accreditation Boards (VETAB).

WorldSkills Australia Nationals - Brisbane 2010 - Restaurant Services

"Look out London here comes Australia" are Kate Crocker's words as she competes in the Restaurant Services competition at WorldSkills. She originally decided to compete at the WorldSkills to compete with her sister who came third in a previous year and now that she has made it this far has sparked jealousy and pride from her.

Choosing to do Hospitality in Year 11 she spent one night a week at Tafe going over the basics such as Silverware and table setting. It was from here that her passion grew and love for the industry. She warns that people shouldn't underestimate the trade. It is so much more than waiting tables as she puts it. It is about engaging and working with diners to give them a great experience in learn from what they might want to share.

In the future she would like to work on an Island and even open her own restaurant with her chef friend Matt. If Kate wins WorldSkills she admits that the first thing she will do is most likely cry.
