Nursing Careers

SkillsOne heads to Bankstown Hospital to learn about a unique program for school students wanting to get experience in the nursing Industry. The Vet-IS Certificate III in Nursing is run in collaboration with Bankstown-Lidcome Hospital.

We chat to serveral students who are taking part in the course: Emma Ventrella and Ruby Jackson.

We also hear about what the course involves, from Nicole McGreal, the Nurse Educator.

About The Program:

Year 11 and 12 High School students can attain a Certificate III in Health Services (4 units in Year 11 and 2 units in Year 12).

After school they can do a Certificate IV at TAFE to become an Enrolled Nurse or a three year Bachelor Degree at Uni to become a Registered Nurse or Midwife.

The Vet-IS Nursing Cert III subject is conducted in collaboration with Bankstown-Lidcome Hospital, which is a site of Sydney South West Area Health Service.

Canterbury Bankstown Career Connections work with local schools and industry to accelerate the learning process for individual Vet-IS students. They set up work experience for students studying nursing at the Bankstown Hospital.

This group of five East Hills High School girls spend their holidays at the hospital doing actual nursing duties. While their access is limited, they do get to wok on patients in the areas of midwifery, general registered nurse duties and elderly care.

All of these girls are studying nursing as a Vocational Education in Schools subject for year 11 and 12 and they are doing this work experience because they have already decided on nursing as a future career path.

At the hospital they have 'shadowed' different members of the nursing staff.
