WorldSkills Australia Landscaping at The Royal Easter Show
Two of Australia’s best young landscapers showcased some of their top skills to thousands of show goers at the Sydney Royal Easter Show from Saturday the 16th to Tuesday the 19th of April, 2011.
Landscapers Richard May and Thomas Ramsey demonstrated how to give the average garden an exciting new makeover at The Sydney Royal Easter Show at Sydney Olympic Park. The pair shared their expertise at the event as part of their training for the 41st WorldSkills International Competition 2011 held in London from the 5th – 8th of October 2011. The 21 year olds have been selected to represent Australia as part of the Team Australia Skillaroos after competing at the WorldSkills Australia National Competition, Brisbane 2010 in May of last year.
In preparation for the International Competition, which will be held at ExCeL London in the Royal Docks, Thomas and Richard trained both individually and as a team. Richard who is from Kellyville in Sydney received the Silver medal for the Landscape Construction category at the National Competition. Thomas, a resident from Nicholls in Canberra placed 4th overall in the WorldSkills Australia National Competition. Landscape Construction is one of two team categories that Australia will be competing in at the International Competition.
Thomas and Richard will be recreating the same landscaping project that was carried out at the WorldSkills International Competition in Shizuoka, Japan 2007. The two landscapers will demonstrate to visitors of the show how to construct a natural stone retaining wall with an attached fountain which will recirculate water to and from a feature pond, located in the centre of the garden. They will also be required to build a patio area as well as a granite set path which leads to the centre of the garden.
Training in front of large audiences is imperative for both Thomas and Richard in order for them to build up confidence in high pressure situations. It is anticipated that over 250,000 visitors will attend the four day competition to watch 1,000 competitors from 54 nations compete for the ultimate title of the ‘world’s best tradie’ at the WorldSkills International Competition.

Day One of Competition at WorldSkills London 2011 with Mark Callaghan
