WorldSkills Australia Nationals - Brisbane 2010 - Landscape construction

Adam got into the trade through his dad who has had a landscaping business for 20 years. Since year 8, Adam has been helping him out on weekends and holidays. When he finished year 12 got an apprenticeship with his dad (which he has now completed).

Adam likes the fact that a plot of land is a blank canvas, you start with nothing and then end up with a beautiful floral picture. He enjoys drawing and designing gardens, talking to the client, working out what they want and giving it to them at the end of the day.

He got into Worldskills in 2008 whilst at TAFE. He likes the pressure of competition and the chance of winning.  His father has also been helping with the competition for several years. He thinks it’s important because it helps apprentices to become the best and see the standard provided by other apprentices.  Adam competed against the other apprentice's he works with and was glad to be placed first!

Adam is most worried about the sandstone part of the competition because it’s a material they don’t use in his area (mainly coastal regions). He’s therefore spending some time this week working on his rockwork so the other competitors don’t get an advantage.
