Apprentices get cutting edge training in skill shortage

The Glass and Glazing industry and South Western Sydney Institute work to continue to provide apprentices with top state of the art training in glass and glazing. The donation of new cutting-edge industry equipment to TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute at Lidcombe College on Wednesday 24 March will make this a reality. Mrs. Barbara Perry MP, Member for Auburn, will take part in the handover of the machine being donated to Lidcombe College.

“South Western Sydney Institute provides state of the art specialist training facilities across many industry sectors, and Lidcombe College has always been a specialist centre for training in the glass and glazing industry, with students coming from all over NSW to train with us,” said Acting Institute Director Phil Cox.

“Our students will now be training on the most up-to-date technology in the industry, providing them with greater work opportunities.

“I would also like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the Glass and Glazing industry for their generous donation of this machine and the benefits it will bring to current and future students.”

Head Teacher for Glass and Glazing Mark Nicholls said today, “The new Intermac Master 23 CNC (Computerised Numeric Control) machine is the most advanced technology used in the industry.  The Intermac CNC is able to drill, polish, profile and shape glass using CAD modelling systems and various edging and cutting tools.  These machines are used for the production of glass for furniture, frameless shower screens, shopfronts, and glass splash backs.”“TAFE has a long history and relationship with the NSW Glass and Glazing Association and the continued support of the Association will enable us to deliver state of the art training in CNC to the NSW Glass and Glazing Industry.”

Joe Finn, President of the NSW Glass and Glazing Association said “We as an industry in NSW recognise the high educational standard that is set and achieved by the teaching staff at Lidcombe TAFE and we are exceptionally proud to support them in this initiative.”

The official handover of the machine will take place at Lidcombe College at 3:15pm on Wednesday 24 March.
