The National Centre for Vocational Education Research has released the Australian apprentice and trainee statistics for the September 2009 quarter.
In total there were 425 500 apprentices and trainees in-training as at the end of September 2009, a decrease of 2.4% from the previous year.
Comparing apprentice and trainee activity in the year to 30 September 2009 with the year to 30 September 2008:
- the number of people commencing a trade apprenticeship decreased by 20.5%
- the number of people commencing a non-trade apprenticeship or traineeship decreased by 0.8%.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the decline in the number of people starting a trade apprenticeship has steadied, with a 0.6% decrease in the September quarter 2009. Looking back over the previous 18 months, trade apprenticeship commencements declined 25.1%.
