The network of careers resource centres has been established over a period of 4 years.
The network operates independently of one and other, across three organisations. They are Hunter Valley Youth Express in the Hunter Valley, who operates a one stop careers centre in Maitland, and two mobile careers units servicing the Upper Hunter and parts of the Lower Hunter, made possible through the Coal & Allied Community Trust in the Hunter Valley. Careers Network Inc operates a one stop careers centre in Tamworth, called the ‘Careers Shack' at Careers Network. Rural Skills Australia is developing a mobile unit to service regions from the Murrurundi Range, north to the NSW QLD border, as well as parts of the Mid North Coast and hinterland regions.
There will also be numerous occasions where the combined resources of both mobile units will unite, to further enhance the careers advice experience throughout the Upper Hunter. The network is united through the service each provides under the Career Advice Australia (CAA) initiative, which is funded by the Australian Government and contracted by DEEWR.
Across the network, over 58,000 young people aged from 13 to 19, are presented with the unique opportunity to access careers advice, in hard copy format and electronically, from sources and networks all across Australia. Two Regional Industry Career Advisers (RICAs) based in the Lower Hunter, and in the North West of NSW, work with each of the three organisations, to source careers resources, to make certain the most up to date and informative careers information is available to all young people including those who have signed out of school.
There are literally hundreds of live, current careers based websites and links available for people to access. Keeping up with changes and the introduction of new sites, takes commitment, it is this commitment to young people that the network of careers resources centres offer. Skills One, an initiative of the Institute for Trade Skills Excellence, and an affiliate of the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) contains a vast array of short presentations and is one of the premium careers resource and information sites available online today. The network of careers resource centres and Skills One complement each other well, and together can take careers advice to a new level.
