| Retail School with iSTEPS |
|
iSTEPS’ - (Indigenous Special Training and Educational Program) at Blacktown TAFE - mission is to deliver Certificate III and above programs to Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people, utilising new and innovative delivery techniques that will enable participants to be workplace assimilated. iSTEPS, which was developed by Roland Hermens, Greg McCauley and Dr John Wylie and funded by the Aboriginal Equity section at Mt Druitt TAFE, aims to move away from typical classroom delivery and provide an "active learning" forum in which the participants will experience a greater personal and practical exposure to the retail environment. This perspective attempts to encourage students to identify and explore individual interests occurring within the retail sector. Sensitivity to the interaction of indigenous cultural heritage and modern western idiosyncrasies is a major focus. Retail is a massive part of the Australian economy, making up about 14% of the country's employment, and therefore is always in need of keen and able workers.
