Wigs for a Cause

SkillsOne visits Sandra Cramb, from the Hairdressing faculty at Kingscliff TAFE. We learn about an innovative scheme in which students at Kingsliff TAFE can boost the self esteem of cancer patients, by providing them with a free wig-library. They consult with patients to see what hair colour, style and type they'd like to create the look they desire.

 About the Wig Library:

Cancer patients underoigng chemotherapy experience hair loss owing to the radiation used during the therapy process. This hair loss can impact on patient's self-esteem and confidence. Patients will often cover their hair loss with a cap, head covering or wig.

A wig however must be tailored to suit the individual wearer and public hospitals do not have the facilities to provide this.

Recognising this, Kingscliff TAFE on the NSW North Coast has built a "wig" library. Hairdressing students receive wigs in various colours made from natural and synthetic hair and then style them in a range of contemporary styles.

Patients from Tweed Heads hospital visit the TAFE where wigs are customised to suit their appearance. The service is provided free of charge and has proven popular with students and patients alike.

Skillsone visit Kingscliff TAFE to talk to hairdressing teacher Sandra Cramb about the wig library program and the benefits it has brought in improving the lives of cancer patients.
