Child and Family Studies

SkillsOne talks to Kim Rowland, a TAFE Teacher in Child Studies, who tells us about what exactly takes place in the course. We find out the subjects which are studied and what is needed to get into childcare and be a success.

About Kim:

Kim is a bubbly, bright teacher with 3 children. After finishing high school Kim completed a course at the institute of early childhood. She has worked in long day care centres, colleges and schools… she decided she needed a change and started working at TAFE as a Part Time casual. She works 2 days a week, but, next term she will be working a night as well. As well as teaching she is the co-ordiator of Certificate 3 and is the liaison officer. She absolutely loves it! She teaches the course so it is interactive, fun, entertaining and gives students real life examples. She is always learning from the students!

She co-ordinates: Work place assessments, students excursions and Trainee Programs.

Some of the subjects she teaches are:

Care for children and babies

Programming and planning activities

Health and Safety

Preparing Play Environments

Children's Development

First Aid

Working with families

Legal and ethical studies

They are crying out for more guys to do the course!
