Metro Television was incorporated in 1981, and was originally known as The Paddington Video Access Centre. During the eighties Metro was instrumental in developing community access to video and television production through training, productions and capital investment in equipment and facilities. In the late '80s Metro organised the community television trials and was a key organisational player in the establishment of community television services. Metro is again involved in setting up the new community television station for Sydney, Television Sydney (TVS).

In 1997, the name was changed to Metro Screen to reflect its move into digital media. They began training in interactive multimedia, and working across screen art forms in digital technology.

In 2001, with funding from the NSW Ministry for the Arts and the NSW Film and Television Office, Metro Screen initiated a mobile unit to service regional NSW and Western Sydney. The NSW FTO has also recently funded new media projects like Digital Salon and Metro Mobility, creating new training and production possibilities for emerging artists.

Metro Screen is a founding member of Screen Development Australia, the national network of screen resource organizations. The other members of SDA are Open Channel (VIC), QPIX (QLD), Media Resource Centre (SA) and Film and Television Institute (WA).
