Animal Kingdom

SkillsOne heads to Symbio Wildlife Gardens to learn about the animal care industry. We chat to Janet Knight, from The Shire Group Training, who shares what training schemes the not-for-profit group provides.

Cameron Candy is a month into his Zoo Keeping Traineeship. He shares what motivates him to get involved in the industry.

The Director of Symbio Wildlife Park, John Radnidge, shares his knowledge of the Animal Care industry, and what he looks for in trainees.

Joshua Robbins and Lauren Oates are also Trainee Zoo Keepers who share what drew them to work with animals.

Symbio is an award-winning zoo based in Helensburgh NSW. It is a family owned and operated zoo set on 16 acres of bush parklands. They are known for providing hands on encounters for visitors.

They currently have three trainees undertaking the Cert III in Captive Animal Care: Lauren Oates, Joshua Robbins and Cameron Candy.

Captive Animal Care training now replaces the old Zoo Keeping courses and traineeships. They are incredibly popular courses, with Janet saying she receives far more applications than there are positions available in the industry.
