Defence Trades 101

This video explains the diverse range of opportunities offered by the Australian Defence Force.

The Navy, Army and Air Force need highly trained technicians and tradesmen to ensure that every piece of equipment, from ships, jets and tanks, through to missile systems and telecommunications networks, are maintained in peak condition.

ADF recruiter Greg Caddy explains that a civilian apprenticeship can take up to four years to complete, but an ADF apprenticeship can be completed in half the time, just one-and a-half years.

In addition to undertaking their normal training, ADF apprentices receive a range of additional benefits including rental assistance, free medical and free dental care.

All ADF trades are nationally recognised meaning that ADF tradespeople who leave the Defence Force can move into a similar or equivalent civilian trade career.

Pay & Benefits Snapshot

During Basic Recruit Training ADF apprentices receive $26, 552 per year, which will increase to $30, 015 per year once you begin your apprenticeship. When you have successfully qualified you earn $48, 998. This amount will continue to increase based on your rank and years of service.
