Fitting & Machining at Blue Scope Steel

This video shows the opportunities available to apprentices through the Illawarra Group Training (IGT) which is the major employer of apprentices in the Illawarra region, especially in the Engineering and Electrical Trades, as well as Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning and Plumbing. IGT also offers traineeships in a variety of vocations including Business, Transport & Distribution, and Financial Services.

We hear about John Hagenaar's trade as a fitter and machinist. John finished school in year 12 and had a couple of casual jobs before starting an apprenticeship in carpentry, which he felt he wasn't suited to. One of his mates got an apprenticeship with BlueScope Steel and he encouraged John to apply. Now, his job involves fitting and mechanical maintenance of machinery at BlueScope. John has won a scholarship at BlueScope Steel to complete his diploma, and he is hoping to move into management one day.
