Restoring a steamship takes many skills. In this story we meet some of the people involved in restoring the John Oxley. Carpentry, boilermaking, sheet metal work and pattern making are just some of the skills needed.
While most of the restoration work is done by volunteers, the Sydney Heritage Fleet also employs a full time boiler maker, Onsie Ratu, and an apprentice boiler maker.
Many of these skills, such as hot riveting, are a dying art. While restoration work is a slow process, those involved see the importance of preserving the past for future generations.
Turning at World Skills 08 SkillsOne visits WorldSkills at Darling Harbour. It's the 2008 National Competition - and we visit a boilermaker competitor and see just what the trade is all about. Pete Buckey, a fitter and turner judge, runs us through the tasks which the competitors are undertaking.
Toolmaker made good Over 35 years ago, toolmaker Carlos Broens arrived in Australia speaking limited English. Today he is the boss of the highly successful Broens Engineering company, employing over 140 staff and 34 apprentices.
