Stonemasonry at TAFE

Stonemasonry (Monumental/Installation) is a course offered at only one place in the state - Miller College Institute of TAFE, and students come from all over the place to study it. Head teacher Michael Landers tells us about the course which can be done as part of an apprenticeship, allowing trainees to complete their on and off-the-job training by applying their skills and knowledge to projects in new construction, maintenance and repair, additions/alterations and renovation.

Students also learn stonemasonry techniques and procedures in most types of domestic and commercial building, industrial construction and design both modern and traditional works. This will also include training in aspects of conservation, restoration and heritage work. Applicants must have appropriate employment in the building industry to support units of competency within this qualification.

Luke McDermott is a third-year apprentice and has recently swapped jobs, which is totally acceptable in this industry. It is good to work for different companies and have a go at a variety of projects. He was originally working for the Traditional Stone Masonry Company, and now is working on heritage buildings for the old public works.
