Prime Minister's Award for Skills Excellence

The winners of the Prime Minister's Award for Skills Excellence have been announced.

This national award recognises Year 12 students who demonstrate excellence and outstanding achievement in vocational and technical education in each state or territory.

In recognition of their exceptional achievement, each winner receives a framed certificate signed by PM John Howard, and a cheque for $2,000.

Among the outstanding students is 17-year-old Natasha Taylor from Mackay Christian College in Queensland.

Natasha is studying to be a Boilermaker and won the highest Achieving Student in the Manufacturing Industry Award.

She said she found school-based apprenticeship options a great way to kickstart her career.

When she finishes her apprenticeship, Natasha wants to explore some of the specialised welding options, such as pressure pipe or DIVE welding.

The awards are broken down into states and industries and for a full list of winners click here.
