Great ways to get inspired

Hi everyone,

You've probably seen the new commercials on TV promoting the "Skills for the Future" scheme...but it's worth taking a closer look to find out how the latest changes can help you. With so many incentives, there's never been a better time to consider learning a trade skill.

First, there are concessions like an additional $2,000 tax-free payments to first and second year apprentices under 30. People over 30 aren't left out though! Eligible apprentices receiving an additional $150 per week in their pay packet.

Then there are the Apprenticeship Training (Fee) vouchers for all eligible first and second year apprentices. The voucher allows apprentices or their employers to claim up to $500 per year for course fees incurred as part of the first and second year of their Australian Apprenticeship.

There are heaps of other concessions, many of which have been extended recently to further trades, such as the tool-box rebate. Take a look at: www.skillsforthefuture.gov.au and keep an eye on this site for updates.

Tell us what the next "Ultimate Apprenticeship" should be

Following the success of our recent Ultimate Apprenticeship competition, where one lucky person won a place on the F1 Pitt team, SkillsOne will soon be launching the next Ultimate Apprenticeship competition.

This is your chance to tell us what the Ultimate Apprenticeship would be to you. Maybe you want to be a roadie on a Powderfinger tour or do Hair and Makeup for famous actors on the set of a movie? Tell us now!

Skills Olympics

In November this year, 27 young Australians will compete at the WorldSkills International Competition. Competing across 24 trades, Australia's young tradespeople will put their skills training to the test.

One young hopeful is Shareena Sloan, who will be competing in the painter - decorator category.

Shareena beat 14 other hopefuls in the painting - decorating national competition to secure her spot at the Skills Olympics. She was also featured in the September Bulletin Magazine said she's only ever wanted to learn a trade, but decided at the last minute not to follow in the family tradition of being a sparky. Shareena is looking to use her skills overseas, one of the many benefits and rewards in following a skills pathway. The SkillsOne team have been following the WorldSkills competition, so watch out for upcoming segments on TV and the web.

Looking for Inspiration?

If you're unsure about just how much people get out of learning a skilled trade then you should take some time to look at some of the inspirational videos on this site.

From the dream job of being a mechanic for Team Ferrari to how the love of food inspired Sheryl Tobin to become a chef, there is something here to highlight the benefits of a wide range of trades.

Best Regards,

Brian Wexham
CEO, The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence
