Trade Teacher of the Year wins another major award



Fiona Shewring Trade Teacher of the Year Takes out the Golden Hammer

Fiona22 August 2008 At the National Association for Women in Construction celebratory ball which took place at Luna Park last night, Fiona Shewring was honoured for her work to promote and advance women tradies. She received a golden hammer and a Crystal Vision Award.

The Crystal Vision Award celebrates achievements with vision – those who see a role for women in the construction industry and promotes and encourages women to progress in the industry and Fiona does just this.

She has recently published a book ‘Supporting Women in Non-Traditional Trades ’ and in this book she presents the myths that surrounds women working in trades and debunks them. Fiona talks about technique over strength and profiles sixteen women in what once were thought of traditional male dominated trades.

Fiona says that winning the award is “not only validation for the work I’m doing, this accolade also shows that the construction industry does want women going into trades, that the industry does appreciate and support the contribution that women make.

The newly appointed Crystal Vision Award winner is The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence Trade Teacher of the Year 2007. With development prize money garnished from this award Fiona was able to publish her book, Supporting Women in Non-Traditional Trades.

“The trade teachers award has meant a great deal to me, it has been significant in strengthening my personal sense of worth but it hasn’t just had personal impact: it has validated the work that I am passionate about and allowed me to reach beyond boundaries which I may have considered closed. Without The Institutes awards my book wouldn’t have reached so many people”.

Nominations for 2008 Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year Awards can be made via www.itse.com.au The Institute is accepting nominations until the 5th September. The Australian Trades and Skills Teacher will be named at the Australian Training Awards which will take place on Thursday, 20 November, in Darwin.

About the Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year Award

The Trades and Skills Teacher Awards are run by The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence, an organization dedicated to recognizing excellence in trades and skills education and training.

Brian Wexham, The Chief Executive Officer of The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence said that the Australian Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year Award recognises teachers who dedicate their lives to ensuring tomorrows trades and skills people are armed with the very best skills through their innovative teaching methods.

“This Award acknowledges leadership in developing tomorrow’s skills and trades professionals. It was established to give deserving teachers in the trades and skills arena the opportunity to implement professional developmental projects, that otherwise would not have been possible without funding.

“The Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year Award derives its success from identifying teachers who are able to move beyond delivering only to curriculum and who meet industry standards to ensure Australia continues to turn out the most highly skilled men and women,” said Mr Wexham.
