Builders urged to join green boom

The Green Building Council of Australia says the construction industry can play a pivotal role in reducing greenhouse emissions.

The Council says more developers and tenants are demanding buildings meet environmental standards.

Chief executive Romilly Madew says manufacturers and suppliers are working quickly to provide the industry with green building products.

"I mean you look at the statistics on what you can recycle in buildings, it's huge," she said.

"You can recycle the concrete, you can recycle the glass, so the newer buildings should last longer but they should also be able to deconstruct and reconstruct - so there's actually two things."
