Car unions fight for industry future

Nearly 60 union delegates from South Australia's car manufacturing industry have voted unanimously for a campaign to protect the Australian car industry.

They want the Federal Government to preserve a 10 per cent tariff on imported vehicles and invest more in environmentally-friendly cars.

National secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union David Oliver says only about one third of Mitsubishi workers who were made redundant back in 2005 have found permanent employment elsewhere.

"Forty-eight per cent of workers were out of work for six months, 73 per cent of those who found employment have reduced wages and conditions," he said.

"There's a lot of casualisation and non-permanent employment out there which highlights the fact that manufacturing jobs are important to sustain a good economy."
