New teachers' video website launched

Over 500 professionally produced videos of teachers in action will be available to view online by Australian teachers, principals and people working in education from, early childhood through to vocational education, with the launch of www.teacherstv.com.au by Teachers' TV Pty Ltd.

The launch of the site is timely for Australian teachers in support of the Rudd Government’s 'Education Revolution' policy of investing in professional development of teachers and improving the quality of teaching around the nation.

The resource videos are about real teachers, in real classrooms achieving real results. Accessed through the teacherstv.com.au site, the online videos aim to give advice, inspiration and general assistance to teachers (of all levels of experience) their professional development and teaching practices.

Executive Producer, Peter Sjoquist AM, said that currently no resources like those available on

teacherstv.com.au are available to teachers in Australia.

“Contemporary resources of this kind do simply not exist in this county, which is what makes teacherstv.com.au so unique and relevant to Australian teachers,” Mr Sjoquist said.

Peter Sjoquist, CEO of The Australian Channel, has extensive experience working with teachers, principals and Education Departments across Australia through his role as Executive Producer of Rock Eisteddfod Challenge, Croc Festival and SkillsOne .

Mr Sjoquist’s team’s experience in delivering innovative educational web based solutions was acknowledged recently with The Australian Channel's win of a Webby Award for its conceptualisation, development and production of skillsone.com.au. Hailed as the 'Oscars of the Internet' the international award is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences based in New York.

The skillsone.com.au video site is created and produced by the same team behind teacherstv.com.au.

“The video resources are stories between 3 and 15 minutes focussing on good teaching practice and inspirational teachers achieving success in the classroom.” Many of the stories have been licensed from teachers.tv in the UK and selected by a group of Australian teachers as being relevant.

Teachers and principals from across Australia were involved in the development of teacherstv.com.au to ensure all content is pertinent, useful and practicable for teachers of all levels of experience from both primary and secondary schools.

“Whatever their level of experience, teachers will be able to log on to teacherstv.com.au and view resource videos from many different areas of the curriculum. The videos show real teachers in real classrooms and how they go about implementing curriculum.”

“Also available are video resources outlining general teaching practices and methods which are best learnt through viewing implementation by other teachers, not reading information from a book or standard website,” Mr Sjoquist added.

"Teachers' TV Australia is associated with www.teachers.tv in the UK which has proven to be very successful as an educational resource for teachers. In the UK 62% of head teachers have recommended the UK website to other teachers,” Mr Sjoquist said, “and we are looking forward to growing and developing the resources for Australians.”
