Farmers relieved as Gov't keeps apprenticeship programs

The 50 million dollar agriculture apprentice initiative seemed doomed to be axed by the Federal Labor government ahead of next week's budget, but they have rethought their move, much to the delight of farmers and ag and horticulture industry associates.

Alan Brown, chair of the NSW Farmers' Association rural affairs committee, is thankful that the Government has listened to the cries of farmers and decided to reinstate the project.

It is a recognition of the strong need for trained people in the agricultural sector.

As Mr Brown said, "Without the ability to attract apprentices and develop the skills, education and training of our future workforce, farming's future capacity to generate economic wealth was in serious jeopardy."

The National Farmers' Federation estimates that there is a labour shortage of 100,000 people in rural industries, and says that the program is needed for capacity building.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Apprenticeship Incentives Program allows Australian apprentices undertaking a Certificate II, III and IV qualification in agriculture (anywhere in Australia) or horticulture (if in a rural or regional area) to apply for an $800 tool kit and up to $1000 to cover course fees in the first and second year.

Application forms for both the tool kit and the training voucher will be provided to eligible apprentices or employers, where applicable.
