SkillsOne's recent nomination in the 2008 The Webby Awards is just one of the many achievements the team that runs SkillsOne has clocked up.
The Webby Awards is the leading international award honouring excellence on the Internet. Established in 1996 during the Web's infancy, the Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member body of leading Web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities.
Nominees are selected by members of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and reviewed against strict criteria before reaching a ballot to decide winners in each category. SkillsOne is amongst only 3 nominations from Australia.
A first for Australia
The innovative strategy and platform behind SkillsOne’s production is a vital part of the website’s success on the international Internet stage.
SkillsOne.com.au is not just a website, it’s a platform. SkillsOne is a project built for The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence to tackle the skills shortage by raising the profile and status of trades.
The site and television production was established at Australia’s premiere digital and tapeless production companies, The Australian Channel.
Digital production innovation
Its seamless workflow was conceptualised from the start with creative and technical requirements established to allow video journalists, web producers and editors to work collaboratively using a high-end shared storage network, specialist editing tools, portable storage and laptops, tapeless cameras, software-based broadcast automation, lean staff numbers and a production schedule producing 18 hours of television per week along with Internet video – at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
The turnaround and quality of SkillsOne programming online and on TV has astounded traditionalists in Australian Pay TV circles who’ve not yet ditched their tape machines and processes.
SkillsOne is a first for integrated Australian web and TV outfits, but it is a first among the many Government-related websites and communications initiatives which exist.
It has been made possible by the combined efforts of an experienced, focussed team including Peter Sjoquist (Executive Producer of numerous high-profile events and productions), Peter Faiman (director, Crocodile Dundee and TV legend), Kathryn Franco (Internet strategist), Andrew Sjoquist (technical specialist), and Peter Burge (TV production head) and their teams.
SkillsOne TV airs nationally on Foxtel/Austar (Aurora Channel 183) each week in a block of programs presented as a branded channel and full broadband website featuring videos, rich content and resources on this site.
