Vocational International Baccalaureate being considered

A more vocational International Baccalaureate diploma, is being considered to aim to attract a wider group of students wishing to take the IB in place of the Higher School Certificate and it is thought that this will prepare students better for career options such as trade apprenticeships and traineeships.

The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) is known for its well-reputed International Baccaulaureate (IB) diploma which is traditionally geared at students with an academic focus - however, the IBO is looking at providing a vocational version. Its aim is to attract a wider group and equip more individuals with the rich and unique skills which the course has to offer.

Dr Helen Drennen, principal of Wesley College, one of the biggest schools to offer IB in Victoria, believes that this is the beginning of a new vocational direction for the IB as it will provide year 11 and 12 high-school students with the opportunity to study some subjects and take a vocational pathway, with the bonus of having international recognition.

Conventionally aimed at those who want to further their academic education and opportunities, the International Baccalaureate is exploring courses that prepare students for a range of careers in a given field.

This new IB would be accessible to students not necessarily pursuing an academic pathway and hence hopefully draw more students around the world to its benefits, whether they go to university or or take on a trade apprenticeship.

A pilot for this International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate is currently being undertaken in Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Dubai, the US and England. Whether or not it will be adopted in Australia will be determined by its success abroad.

What is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?

A comprehensive and demanding educational program that students can complete to earn worldwide college credit/advanced placement and is examined in 3 languages (French, Spanish and English). It emphasises critical thinking and understanding of other cultures or points of view.
